Kaeda beach, Miyazaki- Feb 2026

Saturday morning at Kaeda Beach, and the water was sitting around two degrees. Absolutely freezing. Still, there were a few brave takers out there, so I figured I’d give it a go.

I went in light at first, taking the Nikonos with a cord attached to my wrist and leaving the Aquatech housing, Sony A1 and a little Tamron 20mm 2.8 attached, and Dafins on the beach. I swam out, took a few frames, then came back in and decided to grab the housing as well.

Round two, I headed back into the water with the Nikonos in one hand and the Aquatech housing leashed to the other. Cold, awkward, and not exactly elegant — but that’s part of the process. The images here are from the Sony, and the film from the Nikonos is currently being developed by Kitamura Camera.

Normally their turnaround is about 24 hours, but I managed to get a bit of silicone grease on the end of the film, so it had to be sent away to be cleaned and processed properly. Total cost came to ¥1,650, which honestly feels fair if it saves the roll. I’ll post those images once they’re finished.

No keepers this time, but still a fun swim and a good excuse to get in the water on a cold Miyazaki morning. Sometimes that’s enough.
