Ocean people — Spending time with Arai-sanAra san , 82 year old AMA diver.

I’ve spent time with Arai-san about five times now, and every time I leave feeling inspired by his drive and his love of life. He’s 82 years old and still an active working diver. Although he did complain with a smirk that the insurance company wouldn't cover him after the age of 80. He waited for the sun to rise and warm the air a little, entering the water at 9:30am and finally coming out at 3:30pm with his catch — two large octopus you can see in his bag underwater and around seven good crayfish.

I followed him for a few hours, shooting video and photos of his working day. Afterwards, we talked about his opinion on the sharks in the area and then the longevity of the modern wetsuit I was wearing compared to his traditional rubber suits.

I’ll be posting the video of him soon, but for now, here are the photos from that day. Shot on a Sony A1 with Tamron 35mm and 20mm lenses in an Aquatech housing. @tamronaus@sonyalpha.anz
